November 25th, 2011 - Spartans Extend Fall Semester with Added Game Against UC Davis

The Spartan hockey team thought their semester was over after their disappointing loss to Sacramento State in Vacaville on November 4th, but have instead added one additional game since then against UC Davis. After nearly a month off, the Spartans will travel back to Vacaville to play in the same venue but against a different team. The puck drops on Friday, December 2nd against the UC Davis Aggies at 6:45PM at Vacaville Ice Sports.

In other news, the Spartans have also fleshed out their second semester schedule to include 12 games in about a 6 week span. The team has added a road trip that will have three stops before heading home against Boise State University, Weber State University, and Brigham Young University. Locally, the team has also added games with San Francisco State University, Fresno State, UC Davis, and an exciting double header where the Spartans will take on the Santa Clara University Broncos immediately following the San Jose Sharks game on Tuesday, January 31st. The team needs to sell 100 tickets to be able to play in the game. For more information on purchasing tickets, please email the team president at president@sjsud3hockey.com

October 28th & 29th, 2011 - Spartans Stretch Win Streak to 3 Games with 2 Wins in SoCal

This past weekend, the SJSU Spartans traveled down to southern California to take on the Panthers of Chapman University and the UC San Diego Tritons.

First up was Chapman University on Friday night. The Spartans went down early in the first period when a Chapman forward managed to poke the puck to the far side of goaltender Nikhil Bhat. Moments later, the Spartans came back as Tyler Hutchings won the faceoff back to Captain Josh Lundy who shot the puck towards the net and Christian De Jesus slammed home the rebound to tie it. The scoring went back in forth in the first period, but the Spartans were able to keep the game at 2-2. In the beginning of the second period, the Spartans came out with a flurry of goals. De Jesus sped past the Chapman defenseman and centered the puck to Hutchings who deposited the puck in the back of the net. Florian Weihs added a hat trick and finished the game with a total of 5 points. At the end of the second period the Spartans were up by a total of 7-4. The third period saw many big saves by Bhat to keep his Spartans ahead for the rest of the game and Jake Garret finished off the scoring for the Spartans with a laser of a shot from the high slot. In the end, it was Spartans: 8, Chapman: 5.

On Saturday night the SJSU Spartans concluded their southern California road trip with a game against the UC San Diego Tritons. The Spartans came out ready to play right away as Tyler Hutchings was able to block a shot and use his speed to breakaway and snipe the UCSD goalie glove side for a shorthanded goal. UCSD took the lead with two unanswered goals in the first. In the second period, Spartan Hutchings thought he tied the game as he knocked in a bouncing puck but was immediately waived off by the officials. The momentum then swung back to UCSD as a defensive communication error led to a breakaway for the Tritons and another goal to put them up 3-1. At the beginning of the third the Spartans shook off the last two periods and came out strong. Bryan Toma played huge to keep his team in the game. Early in the third after an amazing back hand toe drag and drop pass by Hutchings, Florian Weihs went bar down on the UCSD goalie from the top of the circle to put the Spartans within one. A few moments later Davey “UTAH” Goff got his first of his collegiate career after some well executed cycling by De Jesus and Hutchings. At the ten minute mark the Spartans took the lead after Josh Lundy found a breaking Trevor Lobert, springing him for a breakaway and the eventual game winner. For the rest of the game, the Spartans’ hard work helped them prevail with a comeback win over the UCSD Tritons with a final of 4-3. The Spartans are now 4-1 on the season and look to continue their winning streak against the Sacramento State Hornets next weekend in Vacaville.

October 22nd, 2011 - Spartans Capture Second Win at Home from Stanford

The San Jose State Division III Spartan ice hockey team bounced back well after last weekend's disappointing loss to Santa Rosa Junior College with a hard-fought 6-3 win over Stanford University. Fans packed the available seating at Sharks Ice Fremont for the contest. The team would like to thank the fans for their continued support, particularly the large number of fans from the SJSU I-House (international house). The Spartans got on the board early with a DeJesus goal in the first period. The period was relatively even with the teams swapping penalties in a hard-hitting affair. By the end of the first, it looked as though the Spartans were going to go to the dressing room for the intermission only up by one goal, but that changed with 0.8 seconds left in the period when Spartan defenseman Elliot Rock rifled a shot from the blue line that found its way to the back of the Stanford net to give the Spartans a power play goal and a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission. The second period saw more big hits, particularly from first year Spartan Garrett Cuffel. The teams continued to swap penalties back and forth and the teams collected a goal apiece off one another. The second period looked as though it was going to end at a score of 3-1, until a late charging Stanford managed to hammer a puck in past Spartan goaltender Bryan Toma to bring the game within a goal at 3-2. After the final intermission, the Spartans came out and played their best period of the game. The Spartans pushed their lead to two with an early goal, but Stanford quickly answered with one of their own to bring the score to 4-3. However, that was as close as Stanford would come for the rest of the game as the Spartans put their fifth tally on the board late in the third period and later sealed the fate of the Stanford team with an empty goal to bring the final score to 6-3. The Spartans will be on the road next weekend in San Diego playing the Chapman University Panthers on Friday night and the UC San Diego Tritons on Saturday night.

October 15th, 2011 - Spartans Drop Second Game of the Season to SRJC

The San Jose State Division III Spartan ice hockey team suffered a disappointing loss at the hands of a fast, talented Santa Rosa Junior College squad on Saturday, October 15th. The Spartans were outmatched and outnumbered as they were missing three of their first line impact players. Christian DeJesus, Josh Lundy, and Trevor Lobert were all out from the game. The remaining 12 skaters did all they could, but eventually lost by a large margin to Santa Rosa's well rested 20 man roster. The Spartans look to bounce back next week with their next home game versus Stanford University at Sharks Ice Fremont on Saturday night at 10:00PM.

October 8th, 2011 - Spartans Win First Game in Club History!
